What Is Batik?

Batik is a beautifully unique fabric. Batik starts as an undyed piece of cotton, and then a pattern is applied onto this fabric with hot wax. The hot waxed areas will not take up dye so then after several dye baths in various colors, the end result is a complex and pleasing pattern of motifs and colors. Most batiks today are made in Indonesia and ‘Balinese batiks are made on the beaches of Bali.
